RUFUS BROWN – Evil Eyes (Brown’s, circa 1965)

Who was Rufus Brown?  Good question.  His record label lists an address in the Cedar Grove neighborhood of Shreveport.  It also indicates the producer is Marcus Brown…a relative perhaps?  Maybe it's the same Marcus Brown whose 45 featuring "I’m Comin’ Home" b/w "Hey Little Girl" appeared on Peermont Records – another label based out of Cedar Grove.

Readers, why don’t you help us solve this mystery?  Who can share some information about Rufus Brown?

While I have your attention, I should also note: for over one year now, the Shreveport Songs blog has been shining a light on past sounds from our city.  Friends and followers, thanks for the support!

  3. @DH, thanks for sharing these suggestions! I'm not familiar with these recordings. I have no idea if it's the same Rufus Brown.

  4. hi from UK!
Evil Eyes definitely the better of the two sides in my opinion! These sides are listed in Blues Records 1943-70 discography but are they really blues? Who was this guy? Does DrunkenHobo have the other titles to post?
    thx again

special feature on Shreveport Blues on Big Road Blues Show - podcast sundayblues.org - to be aired 2nd December. Presenter Jeff Harris always provides a great two-hour show so this should be of interest. If you like it tell him and tell him I sent you!

  6. According to this obit they may have been brothers
"FRIERSON, LA - Sister Hattie Fuller Brown, long-time wife of the late Dea. Ben Franklin Brown, Sr., along with Othelo and Rufus Brown, two sons who also preceded her in death, departed from us on November 11, 2005 to venture into the presence of the Lord. Having lived a dynamic and fulfilling life of 90 years, Sis. Brown leaves to cherish her memory three daughters and three sons whose lives are deeply enriched by her precious and loving motherhood.

Included among the sons left are Theron (Luther), Ben Jr., and Marcus Brown. The daughters are Flora B. Jenkins, Janice B., Efferson, and Betty B. White."

It would be fun to look up and see who owned that house in 65 but I couldn't figure out how to do it.

    Love "Evil Eyes" !!
